QINGDAO Yach Expo Center

Private client wants to develop 250.000 m2 Yacht Trade and Expo Center with the largest marina in the world on the coast of Qingdao. At Archipelagos we have presented 3 options and the project is now in the process of evaluation by the local government.
“The Mountain” is a megastructure with the Expo Center as a cave-like structure below and the roof as a landscape with luxury terrace housing facing south on top. The two “mountain peaks” are formed to create landscape dominants and house office space on the north side and hotel on the south.
The beginning of marina is open public space with fishermen’s wharf, shops and restaurants on the piers that are inspired by the traditional Chinese villages and landscape.

REGIONAL INSPIRATION – CHINESE LANDSCAPE
Relationship with the Landscape within Chinese tradition differs from the Western tradition as the landscape formation and spatial relationship between them are often given symbolic dimensions and mythical interpretations.

The site itself has specific meaning within the regional context due to the magnificent views it offers. Feng-Shui in this sense plays important role and the site itself sits at the center of the triangle formed by the Hill, Mountain and the Island.

FROM REGIONAL INSPIRATION TO UNIVERSAL IMPACT
This Concept will attempt to understand how can this ancient Chinese traditions of interpretation and relationship with the landscape be implemented and translated within contemporary programmatic and spatial requirements. This Option treats the whole Expo Complex as a landscape. With this strategy duality will be established between natural and man-made.

Presented is one of three options, other two were done by other team members.
